If I could start content creation all over again, what do you think I’d do better?
I’ll tell you. I wouldn’t be afraid. Fear of the unknown held me back from creating. I heard that creators must have a niche and stick to it, and as someone who loves so many things—storytelling, jokes, acting, outdoor and indoor activities, reading—I felt I needed to stick to one thing. That’s not true. No matter the career I find myself in, I always look for a way to express my creativity. So for the sake of anyone just starting out, here are a few lessons I wish I knew before diving into content creation.
• Your content doesn’t need to be perfect from the start.
Perfection comes from rewatching your videos and learning from feedback. Easier said than done, I know. Many of you won’t listen and will keep striving for perfection at the beginning. It’s not a bad thing, but it wastes time. This advice doesn’t apply only to content creation, but to life in general. For Christians, the Bible says: “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin...”(Zechariah 4:10 NLT). Say “I hear”!
• Consistency is everything.
Start with twice a week, then three times a week, just keep showing up. Build the habit. What will help you stay consistent is putting systems in place. Create a content calendar, commit to it, and allow space for spontaneity too. When creative block comes, your calendar will be a lifesaver.
• Don’t limit yourself.
From your little corner, you can reach a global audience. You may be creating from your room, but the moment your content hits the internet, the dice of possibilities has been rolled. Prepare yourself for greatness.
• Get inspired, but don’t copy. Be original.
I mentioned earlier how I boxed myself in by trying to find “my niche.” I became like everyone else, and it was boring. We’re different people for a reason. Our personalities and uniqueness are our power. Be unique. Be yourself. Stop trying too hard to be liked.
• Stay open to collaborations.
Work with creatives at any level. They’ll push you further than you expect. How? Reach out to creators you admire, whether big or small (but especially those at your stage). Collaboration is mutually beneficial in ways you can’t imagine.
I’m rooting for you. Go be the best you can be. And if this post inspired you, please leave a comment and let it contain 🧅💜.
